What it costs to rent a double-decker bus

We do not quote a flat rate at this point, because in our view that would be misleading. What we can show you is what makes up your offer.

The biggest item is the driver and the route, not the number of seats. That is exactly what makes the double-decker cheap per head: eighty people travel with one driver, whereas two coaches need two drivers and two vehicles. On multi-day journeys the driver's overnight stay is added, and beyond a certain distance a second driver, because driving time is capped at nine hours a day.

Double-decker or two buses: what matters in practice

Double-decker and double-deck bus mean the same vehicle. It holds around eighty people on two decks and still needs only one driver. Three points decide whether it is the right choice for your journey.

Height is the most common stumbling block

Four metres of overall height sounds unremarkable, until the bus is standing in front of an underground car park. Hotel driveways, parking decks, underpasses and old archways are the usual trouble spots. If you give us the pick-up and destination early, we check the route in advance.

One vehicle also means one schedule

Eighty people in one bus mean one departure time for everyone. That is usually the advantage: no coordinating between two drivers, no group arriving twenty minutes later in the second bus. But if your group comes from different directions or wants to leave in staggered waves, two smaller vehicles are more flexible.

Below sixty people it rarely pays off

From about sixty people the double-decker becomes economical compared with two coaches. Below that you usually travel more cheaply and flexibly with a single coach, which seats up to 58. Between fifty and sixty we work out both options for you.

The double-decker moves eighty people with one engine instead of five minibuses with five. The larger the group in the vehicle, the lower the figure per head.

Does a double-decker bus fit in everywhere?

Not everywhere. At 4.00 metres tall and up to 18.75 metres long, it needs access roads that are built for it. Underground car parks, parking decks and low underpasses are ruled out. Give us the pick-up and destination when you enquire and we will check the route beforehand.
